UNOFFICIAL: iPad Absolutely Transformational…

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

I’m flagging this as UNOFFICIAL because it’s not my intent to convey any formal Gartner positions here, only a few key personal observations. I don’t buy every new technology that comes along (even my wife would begrudgingly agree but argue that I buy too many…). And I avoided the iPad siren call at announcement time. It was at the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston in June (and a few other events in roughly the same timeframe) that I was seduced. A lot of folks, particularly sales and marketing types, were using them. So I went out and bought a 3G...

Fat fingered sumo wrestlers given iPads (instead of cellphones...)

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

The Japan Sumo Association is distributing about 60 iPads among all the 51 training stables and top association officials from this week to help improve communication. "It seems rather easy to use," association chief Hanaregoma. "Sending emails was very easy." ...The iPad was chosen because the sumo association believed the device was big enough to cater to wrestler's fat fingers, unlike the smaller keys on mobile phones, according to reports. Sumo officials decided to go digital and buy iPads as the ancient sport attempts to mend its ways after scandals over wrestlers' ties with gangsters and illegal gambling, match-fixing and...

Android tablets coming from everyone everywhere {Who isn't readying an Android tablet?}

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

In the past week or so, just about every technology company out there has announced or has been rumored to be carrying a Google (GOOG) Android-based tablet. Here's a list I've compiled below: HTC is using Israeli-based N-Trig to build their Android tablet for shipment in time for holiday shoppers according to TheMarker. The timing may be tied to a dubious rumor but N-trig is separately working with HTC on multi-touch tablets and HTC is one of the leading suppliers of Android devices in the world. Chang Ma, vice president of marketing for LG's mobile-devices unit told the WSJ, that...

Is Apple the real U.S. PC market share leader -- or soon will be?

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

The answer to the question depends on how iPad is classified and how the shipments add up combined with Macs. Is iPad a PC, like Windows tablets or low-powered netbooks? The definition is sure to generate controversy because of what's at stake -- which manufacturer is market share leader in the United States.Late yesterday, I contacted Gartner and IDC, which both measure global PC shipments. But only Gartner responded to my question about how iPad is classified. It is clear from preliminary second quarter PC shipment data that neither analyst firm calculated iPad with PC shipments (Gartner explicitly explained...

Digg founder says Apple iTV launch in September will 'change everything'

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, has heard from sources within Apple that the company will launch its all-new iTV set top box, powered by the iOS operating system, in September for $99. Rose posted on his blog that he believes the revamped and renamed Apple TV hardware will "change everything" for a number of reasons, including the addition of TV applications written for the iOS operating system. Like the iPhone and iPad, Apple's new iTV will have access to the App Store where users will be able to download software to run on their device, he said. With these applications,...

Mobile Flash Fail: Weak Android Player Proves Jobs Right

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

I’m the last person on earth who wanted to believe Steve Jobs when he told Walt Mossberg at D8 that “Flash has had its day.” I took it as nothing more than showmanship when Jobs shared his thoughts on Flash and wrote that “Flash is closed and proprietary, has major technical drawbacks, and doesn’t support touch based devices.” After spending time playing with Flash Player 10.1 on the new Droid 2, the first Android 2.2 phone to come with the player pre-installed, I’m sad to admit that Steve Jobs was right. Adobe’s offering seems like it’s too little, too late....

The clock is ticking for iPad competitors

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM

Some of the world's biggest electronics companies are readying an assault on the tablet market. But before they even begin, they find themselves at an early disadvantage. Though Samsung, LG Electronics, Acer, Hewlett-Packard, Asus, Research In Motion, and Dell have announced or hinted at touchscreen tablets that will arrive between now and March 2011, they're way late to the party. Since the iPad's debut in April, Apple has built a huge lead in this category--in terms of actual devices sold but also in many consumers' minds. Verizon Leak: 1.3 GHz Droid Pro, Android 3.0 Tablet, and LTE All Incoming

Android 3.0 tablets, 1.3 GHz Android smart phones, and LTE are all incoming An army of new Android devices are reportedly incoming from Verizon.  (Source: TSB via Daily Mobile Forum)Boy Genius Report has reportedly been gifted with a treasure trove of roadmap leaks from a trusted source at Verizon.  The leaks read like a mobile user's wish list. First up, it describes a new Android handset called the Motorola DROID Pro -- a successor toDroidX and the soon-to-be-released Droid 2.  The Droid Pro reportedly will pack a smoking 1.3GHz CPU and "global roaming", alongside a more pedestrian 4-inch screen (in comparison to the 4.3-inch monster screen...

TI First to License ARM's Next-Generation Eagle Core ( Tablets & Smartphones for 2012 )

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

In our smartphone and tablet reviews we make sure to spend a good amount of time talking about the silicon powering these devices. There’s no reason that handset and tablet manufacturers shouldn’t be held to the same standards as the PC vendors we’ve worked with for years.  Today the fastest phones are either based on ARM’s Cortex A8 core or a similar architecture as in the case of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. Starting either late this year or more likely sometime next year we’ll see the first SoCs based on ARM’s first out of order core, the Cortex A9, shipping in phones....

My $1,000 iPad Purchase Odyssey (And The Law Of Large Numbers Be Damned)

Saturday 4th of September 2010 05:05:53 PM
Posted by admin / Under Ipad

I'm taking time out tonight to share my iPad purchase story. My experiences in buying this device provide corroborating anecdotal evidence as to why I believe Apple will achieve $20 billion in revenue this quarter and blow away most revenue and eps estimates. My $1,000 iPad PurchaseAt the end of that day I had made a $1,000 iPad purchase (accouterment and sales tax included). I spent $1,053.60 to be exact and $960 before CA sales tax was added. The pre-tax amount is a nice even number because Apple doesn't do the silly ninety nine cent thing on hardware devices. The...
